Bird’s Nest Craft Activity

Nature walk activities for kids - Birds Nest Craft.  Gather sticks, moss, bark and other objects that a bird might use to make a nest. #springcraft

This is a great craft to incorporate into a lesson plan when learning about? birds and what they use to build a nest. Talk to your class about how birds collect different materials to build a nest, then go a nature walk where children can collect twigs, sticks grass, leaves, stems and moss. Give each child a baggie to collect what they need to build their bird’s nest.

MATERIALS:

  • Nature walk items
  • Craft glue
  • Brown construction paper, paper bag, tan or brown burlap, felt or other fabric
  • Colored paper plate – a white plate can be used and painted
  • Printer paper
  • Google eyes
  • Scissors
  • Bird template – 6 will print per page.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Have children go on an outdoor nature walk to collect items for the Bird’s Nest Craft.
  • Print out the Bird template. For this example I printed the birds on blue printer paper.
  • Have the children cut the birds out.
  • Use whatever you have on hand to make the background for the bird’s nest. For this example, I used a semi-circle of tan burlap.
  • Glue the brown semi-circle to the bottom half of the paper plate. Glue the bird above it.
  • Using lots of glue, attach the items that were found on the nature walk on to the bottom half of the paper plate.
  • Glue a google eye on to the bird.
  • Children can cut several small ovals out of white paper to use as bird’s eggs.
  • Be sure to let the craft dry completely before the children take it home.
